Ranking the Diamondbacks - May 2011 | May
logo

After the first month of the season, the Diamondbacks stand at 12-15, five and a half games behind the division leading Rockies. Who has been the team's best player during the the month of April? Surprisingly, the answer is probably 3B/LF Ryan Roberts. Roberts was not expected to make the team out of spring training, but a hot bat in the Cactus League (.509/.603/.660) carried over into the Regular Season. Roberts leads the club in AVG, OBP, and SLG, and he has slugged 6 HR in only 67 AB.  He also has an excellent strikeout-to-walk ratio, with only 11K to go with 12 BB, and he has even chipped in 3 SB.  He has taken playing time away from Melvin Mora at 3B, and has also received starts at 2B and LF. Defensively, Roberts has not been as good, but his bat has been the team's best by far. It would be a surprise if Roberts kept this up all season, but at least for the first month of the season, he has been the team's best player.

On the other end of the scale, Kelly Johnson has been one of the team's biggest disappointment so far, hitting only .175/.261/.311, with 33 K in 103 AB.  Also struggling in the early going have been relievers Juan Gutierrez and Aaron Heilman, as well as starters Armando Galarraga, Barry Enright, and Joe Saunders. Here is my ranking of the team's players so far this season:
