Minor League Promotions for the Diamondbacks | July
logo

The Diamondbacks' Minor League system has made a huge improvement in 2011. Coming into the season, most analysts had the Diamondbacks rated in the lower half of MLB, typically in the 15-25 range among the 30 teams. Just three months later, the team has posted some of the most impressive performances in all of Minor League Baseball, and is generally viewed as a Top 10 system. As we reach the midpoint of the season, several key prospects have been promoted mid-season, such as Pitchers Tyler Skaggs, David Holmberg, Wade Miley, and Outfielder Adam Eaton. Here is a recap of their performances this year.

Tyler Skaggs (19) - LHP

Team W L ERA WHIP IP H ER BB K HR
High A Visalia 5 5 3.22 1.14 100.2 81 36 34 125 6

Will be Promoted to AA Mobile on Monday.
Despite being the youngest starting pitcher in the California League, Skaggs is leading the league with 125 strikeouts, a rate of 11.2K/9. He entered the year ranked as the #82 prospect in baseball by Baseball America, and has jumped up to #19 in their midseason rankings.  Skaggs will pitch in the Futures Game on Sunday, and then will move to Mobile in the AA Southern League, where he will become the youngest pitcher in that league. Skaggs will celebrate his 20th birthday on Wednesday the 13th of July, and is on track to be in the Diamondbacks' starting rotation before turning 22.

Wade Miley (24) - LHP

Team W L ERA WHIP IP H ER BB K HR
AA Mobile 4 2 4.78 1.35 75.1 74 40 28 46 6

Made his debut for AAA Reno on July 4, 2011.
Miley's promotion was a little surprising, as he had only averaged 5.5K/9 in Mobile, while walking 3.3BB/9. But he had pitched much better over the last month, allowing 2 ER or less in each of his last seven starts for a 1.96 ERA over 41.1 IP. He also pitched effectively in his AAA debut, allowing just 5 Hits and 2 Runs over 7 IP. Despite the so-so K and BB rates, Miley is probably battling with Barry Enright to be the next starting pitcher called up from Reno.

David Holmberg (19) - LHP

Team W L ERA WHIP IP H ER BB K HR
A South Bend 8 3 2.39 1.135 83.0 65 22 13 81 3

Made his debut for High A Visalia on July 3, 2011.
Holmberg completely dominated the Midwest League, finishing his season there with 34 consecutive scoreless innings.  During that streak, he had a ridiculous 31-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio, and opposing hitters batted just .089 against him. He was one of the 10 youngest pitchers in that league, and will be one of the three youngest in the Cal League.  In his first two starts for Visalia, he has struck out 11 in 12.1 IP while walking only 2.

Adam Eaton (22) - OF

Team AVG OBP SLG AB HR RBI R SB BB K
High A Visalia .332 .455 .947 244 6 39 54 24 42 41

Made his debut for AA Mobile on July 2, 2011.
For Visalia, Eaton had been among the league leaders in Walks, On-Base Percentage, and Runs Scored, and once again leads a league in getting Hit by Pitches with 14. A 19th Round pick in 2010, Eaton now has a career .473 OBP in the Minors, with an astounding 38 HBP in 140 Games.

Still awaiting promotion is 1B Paul Goldschmidt, who is hitting .315/.434/.630 with 25 HR for AA Mobile. His position at AAA is currently held by Brandon Allen, who is now batting .304/.427/.579 with 18 HR.
