10 September 2010
Pitcher Bryan Henry
, 25, who spent the 2010 season with Mobile Bay Bears in the Southern League, was named to the pitching staff for the United States Pan American Games qualifier
. The top 8 finishers in this tournament, which will be held from October 1-10 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, will qualify for the Pan Am Games in 2011, and the top 6 will also qualify for the 2011 IBAF Baseball World Cup.
Henry pitched in 32 games for the Bay Bears, including 14 as a starter, and finished the year with a 6-4 record and a 3.49 ERA. Henry, drafted in the 12th round of the 2007 draft, has been steadily moving up the minor league ladder, compiling a 3.10 ERA for South Bend in 2008 and a 3.15 ERA for Visalia in 2009 before this year's stint in AA. Although Henry does not strike out many batters (career 6.1K/9), the 6'-3" righthander has done a solid job of limiting walks (2.0 BB/) and home runs (1.0 HR/9) in his minor league career.
The star players on the Pan Am qualifying team are expected to be a pair of Kansas City Royals' prospects, 3B Mike Moustakas
(.322/.369/.630 with 36 HR, 124 RBI in AA/AAA), 1B Eric Hosmer
(.338/.406/.571 with 20 HR in A/AA), as well as Angels' OF Mike Trout
(.341/.428/.490 with 56 SB/15 CS). The pitching staff will be led by the Cubs' Chris Archer (15-3, 2.34 ERA in A/AA) and Royals' lefthander Mike Montgomery
(7-5, 2.63 ERA in A/AA).
