The Diamondbacks traded away LF Conor Jackson
to the A's for pitcher Sam Demel
. Demel, 24, is a right-handed reliever who has a 2-0 record for AAA Sacramento, with a 1.26 ERA and 28K/9BB in 28.2 IP. Demel also avoids the home run ball, allowing only 1 HR all season, and only 10 in his minor league career (180.2 IP). For his career, Demel has a 2.79 ERA in the minors, and has averaged 10.0 strikeouts per 9 innings. He has had occasional problems with control - in 2009, he walked 21 in 32.1 IP, and his career rate is 4.5BB/9 IP. So far in 2010, his control has been much better (2.8BB/9 IP). For his career, Demel has a groundball rate of 54% in the minors, and has been tough on both right-handed (.215 AVG) and left-handed batters (.233 AVG). Demel should be given a prominent role in the Diamondbacks bullpen immediately.
Sam Demel was a 3rd round pick for the A's in the 2007 draft, out of Texas Christian University. Demel throws his 2-seam fastball in the low 90s, and also has a good changeup and a slider.
