In a somewhat surprising move, the Diamondbacks have promoted 24 year old right hander Josh Collmenter from Class A Visalia all the way up to AAA Reno. Reno had openings because pitchers Daniel Stange and Kevin Mulvey were called up to Arizona after the injuries to Kris Benson and Leo Rosales. Collmenter, 6'-4" 235 lbs, was a 15th Round pick in the 2007 draft out of Central Michigan University, and has maintained a solid K/BB ratio throughout his minor league career. Collmenter was off to a great start in Visalia, compiling a 2-0 record with a 2.40 ERA, striking out 21 and walking only 3 in 15 IP. He had just been named the California League Pitcher of the Week before his callup. Pitching for Visalia in 2009, Collmenter had struck out 152 in 145 IP (9.4K/9) while walking 55 (3.4BB/9), and he has a career rate of 8.5K/9 in the minors with a 2.80 K/BB ratio. Collmenter doesn't have the greatest stuff, but he throws a variety of pitches and relies on a deceptive over-the-top pitching motion to fool hitters. Baseball America rated Collmenter's change-up as the best in the Diamondbacks' minor league system. Like fellow minor-leaguer Clay Zavada, Collmenter is also known for his mustache. While pitching for South Bend in 2008, Collmenter was honored by the American Mustache Institute with a Mustache Appreciation Night. Collmenter will make his AAA debut on Friday night at Tacoma.
