Billy Buckner, Kevin Mulvey, and Bryan Augenstein were expected to challenge for spots at the back of Arizona's starting rotation, but ended up losing out to Rodrigo Lopez and Kris Benson. Mulvey has started to pitch better in his last few appearances, but Buckner and Augenstein still haven't been very effective. Matt Torra was called up from AA when Benson was promoted, and has only allowed 4 ER in two starts, but has only struck out 3 batters. The starter who has pitched the best for Reno this year is Cesar Valdez, who has a 3.80 ERA with 25K/5 BB in 23 IP. In the bullpen, Jason Urquidez has pitched surprisingly well, while Daniel Stange got off to a great start before struggling in his last few outings. Lefthander Clay Zavada went on the 7 Day Disabled List after giving up 3 ER in one-third of an inning, and then gave up 3 more ER in two-thirds of an inning in his first outing back. If Zavada is healthy, he may be called up, since Arizona is currently working without a lefthander in the bullpen.  Edit: In his outing on the 26th, Zavada threw a perfect inning with one strikeout. The starting rotation for Mobile has started off fairly well, with Wes Roemer, Tom Layne, Bryan Shaw, and Barry Enright all with ERAs at 4.00 or below. Only Bryan Shaw, however, has strong strikeout rates and a good K/BB ratio. Patrick McAnaney was called up from Visalia when Matt Torra was promoted. In the bullpen, Roque Mercedes and Leyson Septimo are pitching well, and are possibilities for callups to AAA or the major league club. Both are striking out over a batter per inning, but still are walking a few too many. High A - Visalia Rawhide

In Visalia, Josh Collmenter (24) has pitched very well, with a 2.40 ERA and 21K/3 BB in 15 IP. Lefthanders Wade Miley and Taylor Sinclair have nice ERAs, but don't have the peripherals to support them. Bryan Woodall has been the strongest pitcher in the Visalia bullpen, not allowing an earned run in 10 IP while striking out 13 and walking only 2. Class A - South Bend Silver Hawks

Bradin Hagens 0 1 2 8.1 12 8 3 8 8.64 1.800
In South Bend, 2009 draftee Eric Smith is off to a strong start, allowing only 2 ER in 24 IP while striking out 15 and walking just 1. Fellow 2009 draftee Mike Belfiore has a 2.41 ERA and has struck out more than one batter per inning. Charles Brewer and Chase Anderson have also pitched well in the South Bend rotation. The bullpen has not been as strong, as closers Yonata Ortega and Bradin Hagens both have ERAs over 8.00 despite combining for 6 Saves.
